Vegan Coney Restaurant Chili Mustard Onions Opened Yesterday in Detroit’s Brush Park area.
Great Vegan News For Coney Island restaurants.
Coney Island restaurants are a hit in the northern U.S., especially Michigan, and typically offer a mix of Greek and American dishes, including their namesake coney dog. And in this week the first vegan coney island is officially opened in Detroit.

The vegan restaurant is named, Chili Mustard Onions will serve a plant-based version of the classic coney dog—topped with chili, mustard, and onions—and a whole lot more.
Chili Mustard Onions, the city’s first 100 percent plant-based vegan coney restaurant, is finally open for business in Detroit’s Brush Park area.
After a soft opening weekend, the meatless eatery made its official debut at 3411 Brush.

The opening of this vegan restaurant is a long time coming. Chef and owner Peter LaCombe had originally hoped to start serving his vegan menu there last fall, then in the spring, but the opening kept getting delayed.
The small dining room, which is outfitted with colorful paintings from Detroit artist Desiree Kelly (including portraits of Joan Jett and Stevie Wonder), was packed around noon on Wednesday’s opening day, with vegan and vegan-curious diners ordering the signature coney island hot dog, the “Big Mock” (a vegan version of McDonald’s Big Mac; $13.95) and that day’s special, a meatless Philly cheese steak.
The appetizer menu has chips and dip, potato skins, nachos, and a variety of fries. The” the coney dog” is a vegan hot dog topped with house-made chili, mustard and onions. It’s pricier than most coneys at $5.50. Add $1 for a gluten-free bun or to add “cheeze” sauce.
CMO also serves a vegan gyro, “chickun” salad wrap, a “beetball” sub. Most entrees range $9.95-$13.95. There’s also a full wine, beer and spirits menu that promises to be vegan as well.
Chili Mustard Onions is open 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Mon.-Sat. Besides a small adjacent lot, there is street parking on nearby side streets. For now, CMO only offers dine-in service, no carry out. Finishes the report for Detroit News.
