10 Actors You Already Love Who Are Proud to Be Vegan


These 10 actors all have one thing in common: They’re vegan. And they know that their fame helps them give a voice to the voiceless.

1. Woody Harrelson

Woody has been vegan for more than 10 years and has been credited with helping turn actors like Liam Hemsworth andThandie Newton on to veganism. “It’s been all good,” he said of his diet. “I’m obviously much healthier.”


2. Rooney Mara


Best known for her role in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Rooney is a die-hard vegan who is passionate about animal rights. She has teamed up with numerous animal protection charities to raise awareness for farmed animals. In 2017 she attended MFA’s Circle V music festival.

3. Mena Suvari


The American Pie, American Beauty, andAmerican Womanactress is also apassionate vegan activist and has worked with numerous animal protection groups. In 2017 Mena attended MFA’s Circle V music festival.

4. Joaquin Phoenix


Another passionate MFA supporter, Joaquin narrated the video from our 2014 undercover investigation of a Walmart pork supplier. He is also spotlighted in our summer 2016 edition of Compassionate Living magazine.


5. Natalie Portman


The stunning Academy Award-winning actress has been vegan for seven years. She also narrated and produced Eating Animals, a new documentary that received a standing ovation at the 2017 Telluride Film Festival. At last year’s annual Environmental Media Awards, during her Ongoing Commitment Award acceptance speech, Natalie discussed the environmental impacts of factory farming.
In an interview with Vanity Fair promoting her new documentary, Nataliesaid that there’s never been a better time to go vegan. Most recently, she sat down with Mercy For Animals to talk about veganism and her new film for an exclusive interview in Compassionate Living magazine.

6. James Cromwell


James went vegetarian immediately after filming the movie Babe. He’s now a vegan. A vocal animal rights advocate and supporter of MFA, in 2012 James joined our protest against the cruel treatment of pigs by Walmart pork supplier Christensen Farms.
In 2013 the Academy Award nominee narrated the undercover video from our investigation of the Pipestone System, another Walmart pork supplier, which exposed horrific animal abuse. Additionally, he narrated MFA’s Farm to Fridge documentary, which details the lives and deaths of animals at modern farms and has been viewed by millions of people.

7. Tobey Maguire


The actor who stars in Spiderman and The Great Gatsby went vegetarian in 1992 and vegan in 2009. In a 2008 interview with Parade magazine, Tobey revealed that giving up meat was an easy adjustment: “It’s never really been that hard for me. I’ve never had any desire to eat meat. In fact, when I was a kid I would have a really difficult time eating meat at all.”


8. Alicia Silverstone


The Clueless andAmerican Woman actressruns a vegan blog and has written a plant-based cookbook! When she’s not busy working, she’s running around after her son. So where does this mom get all her stamina? Plants, of course!

9. Liam Hemsworth


The handsome actor and partner of Miley Cyrus largely credits Hunger Games co-star and vegan Woody Harrelson with opening his eyes to animal cruelty. “After all the information I gathered about the mistreatment of animals, I couldn’t continue to eat meat,” Liam stated in an interview with Men’s Health. “The more I was aware of, the harder and harder it was to do.” He’s been vegan since 2015.

10. Jessica Chastain


The two-time Oscar-nominated actress known for her roles in Molly’s GameThe Help, and The Tree of Life gets all her energy from plants! “I don’t want to torture anything,” Jessica says. “I guess it’s about trying to live a life where I’m not contributing to the cruelty in the world. … While I am on this planet, I want everyone I meet to know that I am grateful they are here.”
